As a business we identified that certain areas were working more effectively than others both procedurally and financially.

As a board comprising of three directors we identified that we weren’t entirely aligned with our direction for the business for the future and we reached the conclusion that we needed to engage with third party support to clarify our purpose and vision and how we were going to execute them, we needed to ‘work on our business’ as well as ‘in it’.

I knew Geoff, his personality, experience, areas of expertise and how he could support the directors to come together to get alignment, we agreed to a six month assignment.

We looked at the business as a whole, the current context, the individual director’s motivations, legal and operational structures and what we wanted moving forwards. Geoff prompted us to explore areas, individually and as a board, that we hadn’t previously considered.

Invariably, when undergoing change there are challenges, Geoff was able to invite constructive challenge to the discussions to ensure openness and transparency and we ultimately got alignment.

When we settled on our vision we drafted a plan, engaged with our accountants, a HR consultant and started to develop structures that would be fit for purpose moving forwards, we consulted with our employees to ensure that there was transparency throughout the process.

At the end of the six month assignment we felt empowered as a board, we defined the legal and operational structures and we were better placed to move the business forwards with a defined purpose and increased competitiveness.

We enjoyed working with Geoff and would do so again as a business and on a personal level.
